Position Overview
The Legal Counsel will be an essential member of the regional Legal & Compliance team, focusing on managing legal and compliance issues related to the organization's operations in Japan.
This role supports the local branches in Japan and collaborates with a diverse team of legal and compliance professionals across multiple jurisdictions within a global organization.
You will provide legal advice to support business strategies and operations, ensuring compliance with applicable legal and regulatory standards while promoting strong governance practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide legal guidance on the implementation of business strategies, transactions, and initiatives.
- Draft and review legal documents related to business transactions and operational matters.
- Advise on legal issues concerning products, claims, and contracts within the relevant industry.
- Identify and mitigate legal risks in new business models and initiatives.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments in Japan, analyzing their potential impact on the organization.
- Assist with regulatory matters in Japan, including inspections and reviews by regulatory authorities.
- Manage compliance-related issues, ensuring the establishment of appropriate frameworks and processes.
- Enhance corporate governance, particularly in relation to the operation of local branches in Japan.
- Provide legal advice on corporate matters, with a focus on corporate structure, regulatory concerns, and licensing requirements.
- Contribute to regional and group-level projects, providing legal input as required.
- Uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain professional independence in all legal matters.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or higher, with a focus on law.
- Over 8 years of experience in the financial services industry, legal practice with a focus on insurance, or law firms specializing in insurance matters.
- Knowledge of global and local regulatory trends in the financial sector.
- Strong business insight, with the ability to adapt to changes and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to prioritize and work independently.
- Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across cultures.
- Native Japanese speaker, with proficiency in business-level English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience interacting with Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA).
- Japan bar admission.
