Job Description

This position will be responsible for managing day-to-day legal activities within the legal team. Key responsibilities include:

• Managing the legal team’s activities within a country, product, or sub-unit
• Providing legal advisory services to the business and defending legal matters
• Supervising external counsel and resolving moderately complex issues
• Continuously staying informed of regulatory changes, new regulations, internal policy changes, and developments in relevant domestic or foreign laws
• Allocating and coordinating resources and conducting planning activities as needed
• Appropriately assessing risk when business decisions are made, safeguarding the firm’s reputation, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and reporting control issues with transparency
• Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders

This role involves taking proactive steps to address legal and compliance issues, supporting the business in its operations, and ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

Requirements

Experience

• 6-10 years of relevant legal experience
• Valid Bar license in Japan to practice law
• Experience in the banking/financial industry or from a large law firm

Skills

• Strong communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders
• Proven analytical and organizational skills
• Ability to tackle challenges and speak up when the reputation of the firm could be compromised
• Teamwork spirit and a proactive attitude to take charge of situations

Language Skills

• Native level in Japanese
• Fluency in legal English (both written and spoken)

Education

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Master’s degree preferred
